When Seyha was only four years old, she was playing with other children next to an abandoned factory near her home. While running, she tripped and fell on a rusty barrel that had been cut in half, lacerating her calf muscle and leaving her in critical need of medical attention.

Seyha’s parents, like most other families living on the outskirts of Phnom Penh, work hard tending to rice and vegetable fields, earning only $2 per day. When Seyha had her accident, her parents did all they could to ensure their daughter’s well-being, but they simply could not access the immediate care Seyha needed to recover.

The only accessible form of medical care the family could afford was a local medicine man, who mended her wound with traditional ointments, herbs and banana leaves. Unfortunately, within days, Seyha’s condition began to deteriorate rapidly, showing signs of gangrene, until the only remaining option was to amputate.

When we met Seyha in 2011, she was a timid 9 year old, extremely self-conscious of her appearance. Her parents were still attempting to save the money necessary to buy a prosthetic limb. Thankfully, with your support, we provided Seyha her first prosthetic limb and committed to covering her care as she grew.

A decade later, because of your support, we have stood by our promise. We have watched Seyha enter the classroom for the first time at 9 years old, and, nine years later, graduate high school with her peers.

Access to continued mobility care has given Seyha the ability to attend school, make friends, and start dreaming - and planning - for a brighter future.

Seyha is now studying law at university with plans of becoming a lawyer. She has the confidence and the passion to see her dreams through. This is the difference mobility makes. On behalf of Seyha and her family, thank you.
