Roberto was born with Cerebral Palsy (CP), a lifelong disability that affects movement, balance, and posture. When we met Roberto, he had outgrown his last wheelchair, and was painfully using a chair that was too small.
When people think of a wheelchair, what first comes to mind is a hospital wheelchair. When someone is in need of a wheelchair on a temporary basis - a person going into labor or someone recovering from an injury - these simple chairs are sufficient. These chairs are meant to be pushed by another individual, not the patient, and are simply meant to move the patient from point A to point B when they have trouble getting there on their own
But for our CoolKids like Roberto, who spend a minimum of 10-12 hours per day in their chair, an appropriately fitted wheelchair is essential to avoiding secondary health complications, such as muscular rigidity and pressure sores, and the pain and discomfort that is caused by ill-fitted chairs.
We provided Roberto with an appropriately sized and fitted wheelchair, increasing his comfort in daily life and activities, and committed to covering his care.
As children grow, they will need a new wheelchair on average, at least every 2 years. This may be more or less frequent depending on growth spurts, changes in medical needs, and wear and tear. Additional adjustments may be needed to ensure proper support and comfort.
One of the coolest features of Roberto’s new wheelchair is a tray, which makes it easier to focus on his classwork (Roberto began homeschooling last Fall) or his favorite activity, finger painting.
The right chair relieves pain, increases self-esteem, and helps kids enjoy the basic freedoms every child deserves.
When he’s not studying, you can find Roberto playing with his friends or exploring with his family - being a part of his community and enjoying his childhood. On behalf of Roberto and his family, thank you.
CoolKid since 2024.
Roberto receives free mobility care at our program with Motivation Romania in Romania.
